Half of patients recovered from Covid-19 suffer persistent fatigue

The prevalence of extreme and prolonged tiredness in post-Covid patients is investigated in a new study published in the prepress repository medRxiv.

More than half of those studied experienced significant fatigue after recovery from the disease, regardless of severity.

The results have not yet gone through the peer review process , but highlight the need for sufficient monitoring of recovering patients.

In addition to further research for those suffering from post-Covid syndrome to understand the origins.

Post-Covid Consequences

The presentation features of SARS-CoV-2 infection have been well targeted, but the medium and long-term consequences remain untapped, said Dr. Liam Townsend of St James’s Hospital and Trinity Translational Medicine Institute in a statement.

As the global Covid-19 pandemic continues to grow worldwide, the number of patients in recovery and also with post-infection problems is also growing.

One of the common symptoms in people with symptomatic Covid-19 infection is fatigue.

But the study looked at 128 patients monitored by St James’s Hospital in Ireland to see how Covid-19 patients of varying severity handled in the weeks after their post-Covid recovery.

Their results show that 52% of patients reported persistent fatigue in a 10-week evaluation after their “clinical recovery” from Covid-19, regardless of how badly they were while infected.

It was found that hospitalization during active disease had no significance in the risk of developing fatigue in a patient.

Furthermore, the threat that persistent symptoms pose to patients of all ages and levels of risk has been highlighted.

Likewise, research is not alone in this link between coronavirus and symptoms of ongoing fatigue. There are now studies investigating the effects and incidence of what some call “long Covid” to describe the symptoms that remain after the active stage of the disease.

Chronic fatigue syndrome

Coronavirus is not the first contagious disease to be associated with continuous and debilitating tiredness.

He joins the list along with diseases like pneumonia and glandular fever that are considered to be triggers for a condition called chronic fatigue syndrome, a long-term illness with a wide range of symptoms.

The common feature is extreme tiredness. It is also known as myalgic encephalomyelitis, although its legitimacy is sometimes questioned by doctors.

Finally, the result published in medRxiv demonstrates a significant post-viral fatigue load in individuals with previous SARS-CoV-2 infection after the acute phase of Covid-19 disease.

Evaluation of recovering patients

This study highlights the importance of evaluating post-Covid and recovering patients with symptoms of severe fatigue, even if the initial disease was mild.

Therefore, there was no association between the severity of Covid-19 (need for hospitalization, supplemental oxygen or intensive care) and fatigue after Covid-19.

You can also identify a group worthy of further study for early intervention.

The study was published on the prepress server medRxiv.
